3Defy is a free web application which allows you to convert 2D photographs into 3D models. The 3D models can be exported and printed in full-color 3D with services like Shapeways and Sculpteo. The original version of 3Defy offered 2D to 3D conversion tools, but the results could only be viewed in stereoscopic 3D. Now that 3D printers have advanced to the point of detailed full-color physical models, users can actually hold their creations in the palm of their hands. The ability to export a 3D model in the industry standard X3D format opens the door to many interesting applications. For example, 3D conversions can be imported into other 3D modeling programs, modified, enhanced, shared, and sold. 3Defy runs directly in the web browser, and doesn't require any additional downloads. Many user-created 2D to 3D creations can be viewed in the 3Defy site galleries.
